The Interrupter asked:

I’m in my early 20′s and wanted to start getting more serious about playing golf. I’ve played 5 or 6 times in the past couple of years and I’m tired of paying to rent clubs. I’m looking to buy a pretty nice set but don’t know where to start, what brand, sizes, and how to get a good deal. I’m a lefty so it is a little more challenging. Thanks for your help
I’m six feet tall or so and wondered if club lengths and sizes were pretty standard unless you are really tall or really short?

The average club set you find in stores should work just fine. Unless you going pro or pretty tall you shouldnt need sized. I would check amazon.com they have some pretty decent deals and free shipping sometimes. Cheapest set I saw was $80 and most reviews said it worked just fine for them. No need to buy expensive ones unless you really feel you have too. I recently purchased the wilson anti-slice set from Dicks for $299 plus shipping for my dad. It came with everything. Bag,putter, sand wedge, etc.

I’d recommend going to Sports Authority and buy a Box Set
of Irons and Woods for around $200-$300 dollars. Once you
start to feel skilled, then spend the money on something good.

Typically a good set of Irons will start around $1,000 bucks
new and $500 bucks used. Woods and Drivers usually sells
for a few hundred bucks each.

    This website may help too,

I too recently have wanted to start getting more serious about golf. I started with a hand-me down set of irons and this summer I bought a new set of the Maxfli crossbax. Played yesterday and they felt good. Iron set should include about a 3 or 4 iron down to the PW. Then you should carry at least a sand wedge and maybe one or two more. Depending on how many wedges you carry will dictate how many woods you can carry. Obviously you are going to use a driver. Then I’d go with the 3 and 5 woods. Try to keep your driver and woods the same brand but it is not necessary as long as the loft is consistent.
Go to your local golf shops and look around for sets that fit your feel.

If you are getting more serious about playing but don’t want to break the bank buy purchasing brand new clubs, you might check Callaway or TaylorMade’s preowned websites.

You can get a quality set, but not pay the full retail price.

I disagree with a little of the answering… If you are planning on golfing seriously, and want a pretty nice set, go and see a pro to be properly fitted. If you have clubs that fit you and your swing, golf will be less frustrating and more enjoyable for you.

Play around with different clubs, find something you like and are comfortable swinging, be it in a box set (of which I am not a fan) or other, and take your time.

Proshops and major retailers will have sets of all levels, as well as demo clubs which may have only been hit in the comfort of a driving range, and which you can get a great deal on.

    Good luck!

Proper club length depends on a number of things other than height.

If you are serious about playing golf well and starting out right, then I would go to a pro shop that can fit clubs to you. They will tell you if standard length works for you, and will get you started on developing a good swing.

If standard length is ok for you then get a cheap set of clubs (Top Flight XL full set for $200 at TGW.com) and work on your swing until you want and need something better.

The swing is what is important. Find a good one before paying a lot for clubs.
